In early July of 2019, we went into Solar Way Studios to record a couple of songs off of ‘All Histories’ in a live, non-electronic setting. Harmonium, clarinets, saxophone, and objects (metal, paper, wood, plastic) encompass a sound palette reminiscent of the album recordings, yet create a new environment elevated by the wonderful musicians who played them in the moment. They are Sarah Ruth, Isabel Crespo, Emilio Mesa, Garrett Wingfield, Kelsey Gallagher. Plus, the incredibly musical yet calculated accompaniment brought by Matt Young and Mike Luzecky was a glue that brought the whole session together. It was recorded by Joey Golan, filmed by Kylie McLaughlin, and inspired by the great depth of musicianship that exists in Denton, TX.
The two songs in this video - ‘Literary’ and ‘The Same Object’ - act as a type of continuous movement, interjected by bouts of free improvisation and interaction. The lyrics of the first song reflect upon the feeling of love that exists when it is unfamiliar, and when it is so new that it becomes difficult to describe. The second touches on the process of writing music in our modern era of technology, and asks the question of whether music created in this time is inherently different than that which came before it.
